Jewish Federation of New Mexico

@ JCC   5520 Wyoming Blvd NE       Albuquerque, NM 87109       (505) 821-3214       http://www.jewishnewmexico.org

The Jewish Federation of New Mexico partners with Jewish organizations to meet the needs of Jews in New Mexico, Israel and worldwide through leadership, philanthropy, education, and social action.  The Jewish Federation is committed to seeing Jewish life thrive. Its publications include The New Mexico Jewish Link, a newspaper; and Discovering Jewish Albuquerque, a resource guide.

Following the closure of Jewish Family Service of New Mexico, the Jewish Federation of New Mexico has been working with its partner agencies to meet the social services needs of our most vulnerable Jewish community members.

As a result, two new initiatives have been created:

Holocaust Survivors Support Program

To provide Holocaust survivors in the Albuquerque metropolitan area with a caring support system, the Holocaust Survivors Support Program was launched under the auspices of The Holocaust & Intolerance Museum of New Mexico, with funding provided by the Jewish Federation of New Mexico.

The purpose of the Holocaust Survivors Support Program is to provide a dedicated case worker for the estimated thirty Holocaust survivors in the Albuquerque metropolitan area in order to enhance their quality of life.

As part of the Holocaust Survivor’s Support Program, caseworker Susan Minkus, who has extensive experience with the survivor population, will meet ongoing clients needs by providing emotional support; conducting needs assessments including ensuring that client medical, prescription and nutritional needs are being met; coordinating housekeeping services and staffing a quarterly socialization event.

Holocaust survivors in need of Support Program assistance may contact Susan Minkus at (505) 217-4212.

Jewish Family Service of New Mexico

JFS No Longer Able to Provide Services
January 28, 2013

Jewish Family Service of New Mexico (JFS), has served New Mexican seniors and families since 1985. We are sad to announce that the continued erosion in funding by federal, state, and corporate funders; contributions from individuals; and grants from private foundations has forced us to close our doors.

JFS has provided services such as care management, a community food pantry, transportation for seniors, wellness programs, Jewish community chaplaincy, holocaust survivor support, and housekeeping companion services to thousands of needy New Mexicans over the years. Demand for services continued to increase, while the availability of funding decreased significantly.

JFS’s Aging In Place Program was known throughout the United States and used as a model in the federal demonstration project “Community Innovations in Aging in Place”. JFS recently received national recognition via the Diversity in Aging Award from Grantmakers in Aging.

Executive Director Michael Gemme states, “We had been very fortunate to have strong community support and able to get foundation grants and other funding despite the declining economy. However, over the past year we saw major changes in the funding climate and despite submitting numerous grant proposals and other requests for funding, we were unable to obtain sufficient resources to keep our programs going.”

JFS is sending out letters to notify our clients and supporters of the closure, effective February 1st. Additionally, we are making every effort to contact our most vulnerable clients by telephone and refer them to other service providers.

All former JFS Staff and Board members appreciated the support of our dedicated donors and funders over the years. Thank you for giving JFS the honor of serving our community!

To provide Jewish community members at all stages of life, in crisis, transition or in physical/emotional distress with one-on-one counseling and advocacy, the Jewish Care Program of Albuquerque, a program administered by the Jewish Community Center of Albuquerque, with funding provided by the Jewish Federation of New Mexico, will be launched May 1st.

The Jewish Care Program caseworker, an employee of the Jewish Community Center, will be hired to provide ongoing case management services to clients; provide advocacy services, including interceding on behalf of clients to gain access to needed services and supports; refer clients to additional services and consult with Jewish clergy and congregational staff for client referrals. The caseworker will be housed at the Jewish Federation of New Mexico offices.

In Santa Fe, the JFNM Board approved funding to allow Miryam Levy to perform her Jewish Chaplaincy duties under the auspices of CHRISTUS St. Vincent Regional Medical.

In the coming weeks, the JFNM will assess the progress of these initiatives with their partnering agencies, and make modifications as needed. Community members interested in supporting these initiatives may contact the Jewish Federation of New Mexico office at (505) 821-3214.
